No. 5 · Türkiye, 1986

InScope, Miami

December 1–6, 2026

For more than four decades, James Wales has photographed people as they move among the family, community and public worlds they inhabit. His work begins in instinct, a visceral response to what is revealed before it can be articulated. The camera becomes his way of staying with that moment before it disappears. He writes:

“Although this work is often called documentary, I do not think of the images simply as documents. They are records of encounters—between myself and the subject, between the subject and the world around them, and eventually, between the image and the viewer.”

The seven photographs presented here were made between 1986 and 2019.

Each work is a carbon pigment print (Piezography), framed, offered as print 1 of an edition of 7. The exhibited print stays on the wall until the fair closes; delivery or collection follows.
